Dustin Parr Identity

Date: November, 2010
Client: Dustin Parr
Project Type: Identity

Dustin Parr is an award-winning, young photographer. He approached me about the design of his business card and identity. There were numerous constraints -- he was in the process of having a new portfolio printed (which the business card would have to complement), and the printer had a very limited suitcase of fonts. Dustin had also hit upon the idea of using a rubber stamp, so that further constrained the font sizes and overall detail. Finally, Dustin didn't want any stylistic tricks: he wanted an identity as unpretentious and classically informed as his work.

After some discussion of grid systems and a few false starts, we decided on the use of a heavy black rule. The final design references the work of Massimo Vignelli and Piet Zwart while maintaining a contemporary, hand-made feel. Photos by Dustin Parr.
